NYCTEROY
A visual survey of the Centro district of Niterói, a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The images are screen captures of textured photogrammetry models in an orthographic view. The models themselves aim to capture and preserve the visual intricacies of the district, which will hopefully experience a period of investment and urban policymaking in the future.
The title of the series, Nycteroy, could be just one of the many variations found between the city's current name, Niterói, and its much-debated original indigenous form. However, this specific iteration is only to be found used in the name of a local cemetery/memorial site in the neighbouring city of São Gonçalo.
Although the Centro district is undeniably underutilized and in structural decay, it is a most lively space in constant change, mainly due to its role as the market centre of the working class population of São Gonçalo. The somewhat infamous centre artery of the city, Avenida Ernani Amaral Peixoto — once the financial heart of the former state of Guanabara (now Rio de Janeiro) — at night becomes a refuge for a massive number of homeless citizens.
